Embracing the Snowy Landscape
Living in the South and dealing with snow that just won’t melt is a unique experience. Instead of fighting it, we’ve learned to embrace the beauty it brings. Crisp mornings, frosted trees, and the quiet hush that snow creates — it’s like nature’s own pause button. We’ve even started snow-themed activities, like brewing homemade coffee and hot chocolate. Making hearty stews, chili, and "Southern Comfort Potato Hash."
Handling Extreme Temperatures
The extreme cold can be a challenge, especially when temperatures plummet below freezing for days on end.
Here’s what can keep you and yours going:
Layering up: Thick sweaters, thermal wear, and cozy blankets are our best friends.
Insulating the homestead: Sealing drafts and adding extra insulation to keep the warmth in.
Managing heating sources: Wood stoves and space heaters help us stay warm and add a rustic charm to your mornings.
Staying active: Moving around helps keep the blood flowing through the coldest days.
Survival Tips for Cold Days
When the snow keeps piling up, a few handy tips make all the difference:
Keep emergency supplies handy: Extra blankets, non-perishable food, and batteries.
Check on family, friends, and neighbors: Cold days are tough, but a friendly check-in can brighten someone’s day. Shoot them a quick text if you're unable to get out.
Protect your water sources: Prevent pipes from freezing by letting faucets drip and insulating exposed pipes.
Even though we did these things, with the extreme temperatures that we've had our pipes started freezing up anyway. My hubby was quick on his feet and thawed the lines with a hair dryer. So, luckily we haven't had to deal with busted water pipes.
Finding Winter Wonders
Despite the chill, there’s a special magic in these snowy days. We’ve spotted animal tracks in the fresh snow, watched birds bundle up against the cold, and even caught the sunrise casting pink hues over the frost-covered grounds. It’s these moments that remind us why we chose to be prepared.
Final Thoughts
Living through a winter with persistent snow and extreme temperatures can be a test of patience and resilience, but it’s also an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of the season. At Olden Oasis Homestead, we’re learning to deal with the ice and snow and cherish each frostbitten day — after all, these snowy days generally don't happen often here at our homestead. Thankfully!
